In the Gatorade commercial “The Secret to Victory” the creator uses successful athletes to explicate why they are the best of the best. The purpose of this commercial is to appeal to the audience’s emotions through showing the hard work and dedication of top level athletes. Each athlete has an anecdote saying that they failed before they succeeded. A clip of a commentator saying “Serena Williams denied a shot at history by an unseen opponent,” then followed with Serena herself “Be on the wrong side of the biggest upset of your sport.” Symbolizing that greatness comes with the experience of failure first, is what drives Serena. The creator uses Serena Williams because she one of the best tennis players of all time. The clips in this commercial are showing the emotional and physical struggles these athletes partake in order to be the greatest. The work that is put in behind the scenes such as training vigorously shows the audience what it takes before all the fame and glory. Ending the commercial with the subheading “Make Defeat Your Fuel” illustrates the message of this commercial. These athletes accept defeat, then fight back even harder. This ad shows the dark side to the glamorous life of top athletes. With emotion the audience is able to relate with these athletes because they show their realistic journeys that everybody goes through.
